Congratulations to all involved in the Kent Surrey Sussex Academic Health Science Network (KSS AHSN) Alliance for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) for hitting our two-year target a year early.

In April 2018 NHS England set a two-year goal to increase AF prevalence and anticoagulation rates. The Quality Outcome Framework (QOF) 2018/19 data from primary care shows that we collectively reached the target by the end of year one!

In KSS we have increased AF prevalence to 87.3% against a target of 85%, and anticoagulation rates were 84.6% against a target of 84%.

More than 13,800 traces were taken using 560 mobile Lead 1 ECG devices, resulting in 1,415 possible cases of AF being detected and 57 potential strokes saved.

As well as reducing the impact of the debilitating impact of a stroke on individuals and their families, the outcomes represent a saving of more than £2.3 million in health and social care costs over five years.

Jen Bayly, KSS AHSN’s Cardiovascular Progamme Lead, thanked the KSS AHSN Alliance for AF members for their dedication to the project.

“This is a fantastic result and together we’ve made a great impact in detecting AF across Kent, Surrey and Sussex over the last year.

“There’s still work to be done, and it would be fantastic to reach 90% for both AF prevalence and anticoagulation rates in QOF this year!”
