News Health Innovation KSS launches new AVT research, insight and resources 3 December 2025 Share Share on Linkedin Share on X Share via email News Digital, Data & AI Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex is launching a suite of research and guidance to advance the use of ambient voice technology (AVT) in our health and care system. The resources are designed to help health and care practitioners who want to implement AVT, as well as policymakers and the technology’s innovators. AVT research, insight and resources – new & coming soon READ NOW An Independent evaluation report of TORTUS AVT A guide to implementing AVT for health and care managers and workers An information grid listing current ambient scribes with Class 1 medical device status COMING SOON AVT patient awareness videos for use by primary networks An independent evaluation report of Magic Notes AVT These will be published over the next few weeks and months – sign up for our AVT Alerts. What is AVT? Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) – also referred to as ambient or AI scribes – use artificial intelligence to listen, interpret, and document conversations in real time. Instead of clinicians or social workers typing notes during consultations, AVT captures the dialogue, extracts relevant details, and automatically produces structured records. The goal is simple: reduce administrative burden and give professionals more time for patient care. Why is AVT important now? Ambient Voice Technology directly supports the UK government’s push for an “analogue to digital” shift in healthcare, as outlined in the government’s 10 Year Health Plan. The health system faces mounting pressures: rising patient demand, workforce shortages, and clinician burnout, in part driven by time-consuming administrative tasks. AVT aims to address these challenges by automating documentation and freeing clinicians to focus on patient care, which aligns with the government’s vision of digital-by-default services and streamlined workflows. By safely embedding evidence-based AI-powered voice tools into everyday practice, the NHS can reduce bureaucracy, improve productivity, and accelerate the delivery of safer, more personalised care. If implemented correctly, AVT could be a strategic enabler for the next decade of health transformation. NHS England Medium Term Planning Framework 2026 to 2029 – “Providers should deploy ambient voice technology (AVT) at pace, with due regard to the national AVT registry, and adopt the latest in digital therapeutics for both supportive and wrap-around care (and for direct clinical delivery where services have the appropriate regulatory approvals – typically Class IIa).” Fit for the future: 10 Year Health Plan for England – “Introduce…and scale the use of technology like AI scribes to liberate staff from their current burden of bureaucracy and administration, freeing up time to care and to focus on the patient.” Our expertise in AVT We are uniquely positioned to offer insights into Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) because of our hands-on experience with real-world deployments. By facilitating independent evaluations of solutions, such as Magic Notes and TORTUS as part of our Office for Life Sciences commission, we have explored how AI-driven voice tools can streamline clinical documentation and reduce administrative burden in frontline care. At the same time, the evaluations have also helped us identify best practice and potential risks to consider before the rollout of any AVT system. The goal of sharing our findings in this set of resources is to allow our health and care system to navigate these challenges to safely benefit from the technology’s full potential.
