New Guide: How to implement Ambient Voice Technology in health and care
News Digital, Data & AI

Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex has published a practical guide to help health and care organisations successfully and safely introduce Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) into their services.

AVT is transforming how clinicians and care professionals work by reducing time spent on documentation and improving the quality of interactions with patients and people receiving care. But as with any innovation, success depends on how well it is implemented.

Drawing on lessons from two AVT pilots supported by Kent and Medway ICB and Kent County Council in 2025, this guide offers clear, actionable steps to avoid common pitfalls and maximise impact. It includes insights from real-world evaluations of AI-powered AVT tools – TORTUS and Magic Notes – across acute outpatient care, community care, primary care and social services.

What’s inside the guide?

The guide is structured around six areas:

  • Preparation – How to set up your project team, assess product fit and plan timelines.
  • Communication – Ensuring staff and patients understand the purpose and process.
  • Training – Building confidence and competence in AVT use.
  • Managing risk – Meeting clinical safety and information governance requirements.
  • Implementation – Practical considerations for different care settings.
  • Tips for success – Proven strategies to build trust and achieve adoption.

Why it matters

AVT is moving fast, and organisations that adopt it effectively can free up staff time, improve patient experience and reduce administrative burden.

The UK government’s 10 Year Health Plan for England cited it as one of the ways to deliver its analogue to digital shift.
