Mental health digital innovation Overview At Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS), we are supporting the Mental Health Digital Innovation (MHDI) workstream of the UK Mental Health Goals Programme (MHG). Funded by the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) and delivered by the Medical Research Council (MRC), the MHDI workstream aims to accelerate the development, adoption and use of patient facing digital technologies that improve mental health outcomes across the UK. MHDI is building the infrastructure, standards and partnerships needed to enable safe, equitable, scalable adoption of digital mental health innovation across the NHS and beyond while ensuring digital innovation is driven by the priorities, experiences and outcomes that matter to patients, carers and clinicians. One in four people in England experience a mental health problem each year, placing growing pressure on services and contributing to delays in access to care. Digital innovations can help improve outcomes, access and experience through transforming the way care is delivered and offering a wider range of treatment options. But many promising solutions struggle to move beyond pilot projects and into day-to-day practice. Our work in Kent, Surrey and Sussex As part of the MHDI workstream, Health Innovation KSS is leading work to understand what helps digital innovations move successfully from testing into established mental health care pathways. Working with NHS mental health trusts and partners across Kent, Surrey and Sussex and beyond, we are exploring the barriers to implementation and the factors that support impact, long-term adoption and sustainability. By capturing learning from digital mental health innovation being implemented in real-world settings, we will identify common challenges, share good practice and develop practical tools to help NHS organisations (and innovators) introduce, embed and scale digital mental health technologies. This will include case studies implementation guidance. Why this matters Developing effective digital innovation is only the starting point. Ensuring they are impactful for patients through successful adoption and sustained within clinical practice is essential. Through the MHDI workstream, we are working with partners to understand what helps digital innovations succeed in real-world settings, the barriers, and how to take practical steps to overcome these.
