Ageing well

Kent, Surrey and Sussex has a disproportionately older population than the national average.

At Health Innovation KSS we work closely with our integrated care systems and research partners, including the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS), to support our population and health and care system challenges.

The problem

Our population is ageing faster than the national average. This creates additional challenges for our health and care system, with increasing multi-morbidities associated with age, including frailty and dementia, increased health and care demand, and we have additional challenges delivering care in rural and coastal communities (CMO report 2023).

Delivering effective care for an ageing population requires an integrated approach. Demand on services is currently outstripping capacity to deliver care in primary, community and social care, as well as in acute and mental health services. We need to significantly rethink how we approach these challenges, systematically.

Our work

Our developing ageing well programme focuses on integration of services and optimising research and innovation, including digital transformation, with the aim to improve access, outcomes, and experience for our population, workforce, and health and care system.

Alongside our partners, ARC KSS, we have produced My choice, an evidence-based information resource for people living with Dementia, and supported the evaluation of the new dementia care coordinators (DCC) service in Kent and Medway.
