Implementation guide helps practices put Repeat Prescribing Toolkit into action

Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex has developed a Repeat Prescribing Toolkit (RPT) Implementation Guide that gives general practice teams step-by-step help to turn national repeat prescribing recommendations into safer, more effective improvements for patients and staff. Drawing on learning from implementation across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, it provides practical tools, templates and a structured approach to improvement.

The guide helps general practice teams, including GPs, pharmacists, administrators, practice managers and improvement leads assess their current arrangements, identify priorities for improvement, and implement and sustain change in a practical and manageable way.

The national Repeat Prescribing Toolkit, developed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), sets out evidence-based recommendations to support safer, more effective and patient-centred repeat prescribing. Produced in response to the 2021 National Overprescribing Review, the toolkit describes what good practice looks like across repeat prescribing systems and processes.

Practical support for implementation

The implementation guide translates the recommendations of the RPT into clear, actionable steps that can be adapted to local practice settings. It provides a structured framework for planning, delivering and sustaining improvement, supported by a range of practical resources, including:

  • Readiness and self-assessment tools
  • Action planning templates
  • SMART objective setting resources
  • Quality improvement methodologies
  • Measurement and evaluation tools
  • Stakeholder engagement and communications materials
  • Sustainability and continuous improvement guidance

Together, these resources help practices understand their current position, prioritise opportunities for improvement, implement change effectively and monitor progress over time.

Whether a practice is beginning to review its repeat prescribing processes or building on existing improvement work, the guide offers practical support to help turn recommendations into sustainable improvements that benefit patients and staff.

Jo Foulger, Health Innovation KSS Programme Manager – “The Repeat Prescribing Toolkit provides clear recommendations for best practice. This implementation guide has been developed to help practices put those recommendations into action, offering practical tools and resources that support improvement, measurement and long-term sustainability.”
