In a move that bridges the gap between healthcare innovation and medical education, Professor Hatim Abdulhussein, CEO of Health Innovation KSS, has been appointed as Honorary Professor of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the University of Surrey’s School of Medicine.

This three-year appointment will focus on integrating innovation and AI practices into the training of future medical professionals. This is especially timely given the new Government’s plan to embrace technology to support the NHS to shift from treatment to prevention and to increase productivity.

Professor Abdulhussein is a General Practitioner by background with a wealth of experience in healthcare leadership. His unique blend of clinical expertise and technological insight will equip students with the skills needed to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of modern medicine.

Regarding his appointment, Professor Abdulhussein said: “My passion for workforce and education has been a thread throughout my career. I am itching to get back into the lecture theatre, and to help prepare the next generation of medical students for the innovations and technologies that will be a big part of their future in the NHS. I am also looking forward to joining a world class faculty, which will be at the forefront of innovative research globally.”

Prof. Paul Townsend, Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences said:  ‘It’s a pleasure to have appointed Hatim as Honorary Professor of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence at the School of Medicine, adding to our faculty of world leading academics. Our ambition as a university is to revolutionise healthcare and to improve the wellbeing of our community, patient and carers, and Hatim’s expertise and knowledge in the fields of Innovation, Digital and AI will no doubt play a significant part in achieving this ambition.”

Prof. Juliet Wright, Founding Dean of the School of Medicine said: “The School of Medicine at the University of Surrey is patient centred, digitally enabled and interprofessional. Expectations of medical care are changing fast and as we open the doors of the School; we will be training Doctors for the future and pioneering health and medical research. I am delighted to welcome Hatim, who brings a wealth of experience in undergraduate and post graduate medical education as well as the intersection between education, technology, policy and leadership. He will be an excellent role model for our doctors of the future.”

This appointment further strengthens the existing relationship between University of Surrey and Health Innovation KSS. The two organisations have recently launched the Surrey Academic Health and Care Partnership (SAHCP), alongside partners Surrey Heartlands and Surrey County Council.
